The 2027 Ugly Sunrise Calendar

The wait is over.

For nearly eight years, friends, family, and foes alike have asked when I’ll release a Year of the Sunrise wall calendar. It has taken nearly a decade, but I am making one in the most Bugsy way possible.

From the beginning, a project rule has been to never give one photo more prominence than another. So how do I create a 12-month calendar that represents 3,000 mornings? I've never wanted to do a best-of calendar, so what if I do a worst-of calendar?

This “ugly” sunrise calendar gets to the heart of the project.

Year of the Sunrise has always been about challenging the notion of how society views sunrise (oh dear, the number of times I've been asked, "what about when there is no sunrise?"), to rethink what makes a photograph beautiful, and to embrace the harshest of weather conditions.

I have never adopted the idea that “every sunrise is unique and beautiful.” Some sunrises are ugly. Customers of the Sunrise Gallery have said so much on countless occasions. And that's OK.

The message, through the darkest of mornings, is to still find hope and possibility in life.

The Ugly Sunrise Calendar offers a simple reminder—that even on the grayest of days, the sun still rises.
